A 45-year-old auto-mechanic, Shakiru Akinsanya, who allegedly defrauded a client of N397,000 was, on Monday, brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused is facing two-count charge of obtaining under pretence and stealing.

Akinsanya, who resides at Mushin area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mr J. A. Adigun, granted the accused N50, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Adigun, however, ruled that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, had alleged that the offences were committed on May 1 at Aisha Animashaun Str., Ilupeju, Lagos.

He said that the defendant obtained N397, 000 from one Mr Muyideen Alimi under the pretence of buying and fixing some motor parts on the complainant’s car.

Awase said that the complainant gave his Infinity jeep to the accused for repair.

“The complainant gave his Infinity SUV car which was faulty to the accused to put in order.

“The accused asked the complainant to give him N397, 000 after listing some parts he would buy to fix the car.

“It is over two months that the accused collected the money from the complainant for the repairs, he abandoned the vehicle without doing the job nor buying the parts he collected the money for,’’ he said.

The offences contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

Section 314 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretence.

The case was adjourned until August 1 for mention. (NAN)
