A yet-to-be-identified woman was burnt to death in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, after a diesel-laden tanker suddenly got detached from the chasis as it was climbing a hill.
The content of the tanker was said to have spilled on the road, while the tanker crushed a car driven by the woman.
A witness told our correspondent that the impact of the crash ignited a fire which burned the sole occupant of the car beyond recognition.
Apart from the woman that died in the fire, property worth millions of naira were also destroyed.
The witness, who identified himself as Yinka, said, “The tanker, which was filled with diesel, was coming from the Eleyele area and travelling towards Ologuneru hill. The tanker had difficulty climbing the hill.
“Suddenly, the tanker got detached and crushed the car driven by the dead woman. It also emptied its content on the road, leading to fire that consumed the woman, who was trapped in the car, and other vehicles,”
Yinka said more than five houses were destroyed in the fire, adding that diesel flowed towards the Eleyele River which is about 300 meters away from the scene of the accident.
“One of the destroyed property was a church called Save and Serve Ministry, which was just rebuilt after a section of it was affected by the construction work on Ologuneru Road,” he added.
It was gathered that firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service rushed to the scene of the accident to put out the fire.
Also present at the scene were men of the Special Rescue Squad of the state police command and men of the Federal Road Safety Corps.
The agencies reportedly worked together to remove the burnt remains of the deceased from her mangled car.
